Travel to Italy — Do’s & Don’ts

Ciao from Italy!
Our family spent 9 wonderful days in Italy this past June, and I thought it might be nice to highlight a few tips for travel there.

DO:

  • Schedule your activities in the AM or explore later in the PM to avoid summer heat & crowds.

  • Rent a car if you plan to explore Tuscany. Getting to/from the various villages will be so much easier!

  • Try to travel in shoulder seasons if possible (May/early June or Sept/Oct).

  • Schedule a walking tour or golf-cart tour on Day 1 in Rome and Florence to give yourself a quick overview of each city. Plus, ask your guide any general questions you might have!

DON’T:

  • Expect a ton of activities for younger kids (under 7) in Rome. That said, I can definitely share some ideas for the littles!

  • Move around too much. We generally recommend at least 2–4 nights per location.

  • Wait until the last minute to book your stay! For a popular destination like Italy, I’d recommend starting the planning process at least 6–9 months in advance.
